Setup โ about 5 minutes
Lexpert Voice is a local, private dictation app โ your audio and transcripts never leave your Mac. Setup is the one-time permissions step macOS requires of any dictation tool.
Before you start: an Apple Silicon Mac (M1 or newer).
It won't run on Intel Macs. You'll grant 3 permissions and change 1 keyboard setting.
1 Install
Open the .dmg, drag Lexpert Voice to Applications, and open it.
It's notarized by Apple, so it opens without warnings. It's a menu-bar app โ
no Dock icon; look for its icon in the top-right menu bar.
2 Grant permissions
Open System Settings โ Privacy & Security and enable Lexpert Voice under each:
| Permission | Why |
|---|---|
| Microphone | to hear your dictation |
| Accessibility | to type the text into your document |
| Input Monitoring | so the Fn key can start/stop dictation |
If something doesn't work right after granting a permission, quit Lexpert Voice and reopen it โ macOS often applies a new permission only after a restart.
3 One keyboard setting
So the Fn key dictates instead of opening the emoji picker:
System Settings โ Keyboard โ "Press ๐ key to" โ Do Nothing.
4 Dictate
Put your cursor in any text field, then:
- Hold the Fn (๐) key and speak; release when done.
- Or tap Fn to start, tap again to stop.
- A soft chime plays when the mic is live โ start speaking after the chime so your first word isn't clipped.
- Backup trigger: Control + Option + Space.
Tip: a good mic matters. Menu-bar icon โ Microphone to pick your best input (a headset beats the built-in mic).
